Short introduction

I studied Scandinavian Languages and Cultures at the University of Groningen and, after a one-year stay at the University of Uppsala, made possible by a grant from the Swedish Institute, I graduated in 1982. From 1982 until 1988, I worked as a translator and journalist. From 1985-1992 I had several part-time positions at the Department of Scandinavian Languages and Cultures. In 1992 I was awarded a grant by NWO, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research, for my PhD research, which I defended in 1999. My thesis was published in revised form in 2001 by Carlssons in Stockholm under the title: Detta är jag. Stina Aronsons litteraturhistoriska öde.  In 1997 I was awarded a prize by the Swedish Authors’ Fund, inter alia for my activities in the field of promoting Swedish literature in the Netherlands. From 2000-2003 I was also guest professor at the Department of Scandinavian and Northern European Studies, University of Ghent. In October 2011 I was again appointed visiting professor to Ghent Univeristy.

Since 2004 I have been coordinator of the ‘Scandinavian Literature in Europe around 1900: the Influence of Language Politics, Gender and Aesthetics’ project (2004-2010) of the research programme ‘Autonomy and the “new” Independence in the Arts’ of the Groningen Research School for the Study of the Humanities (GRSSH). I have initiated several internationalization projects, such as the internationalization project ‘Peripheral autonomy? Longitudinal analyses of cultural transfer in the literary fields of small language communities’ (2006-2010) with the universities of Ghent and Uppsala and a VNC-project together with the University of Ghent (2008-2011). These projects resulted in a new research project: Studies on Cultural Transfer and Transmission (SOCTAT, see www.soctat.org).

Within the framework of the internet forum Soctat (www.soctat.org) I started together with Jeanette den Toonder a new research group 'Beyond Horizons in Cultural Transfer Studies' in 2013. The research group is part of the Research Centre for Arts in Society. Past and Present.

I have been teaching various modules: Scandinavian literature and culture, literary history, language learning (Swedish), history and translation. I have developed e-learning modules and I was one of the developers of the Lingua2 module Swedish via internet. I participated in the Faculty’s TVO project (Language Proficiency Education), which aims to improve language learning by using tools like e-learning platforms (Blackboard) and other training programmes (e.g. Intuit).
